Small Steps Create Big Shifts
Confidence doesn’t always arrive with a bold entrance. Sometimes, it builds quietly, step by step, as we show up for ourselves day after day. It grows when we choose to try, even when we’re unsure of the outcome. Every time you take action despite self-doubt, you reinforce the belief that you’re capable. Confidence isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about trusting that you can figure it out along the way.
Something I often hear myself say to my clients in session is, “How can we make the first step small enough?” But what does that look like? How do you make the first step small when you don’t even know where to start? It can help to picture the end result- the goal you have in mind, then work backwards from there. What micro-step can ignite a spark? For some it’s writing an email (or simply finding the email address they need); for others it’s gathering the materials or information needed to begin a project such as buying a home, applying for new jobs, or starting a medical treatment.
The key to making things happen isn’t waiting for the perfect moment; it’s starting with what you have, where you are. Big goals can feel overwhelming when viewed all at once, but momentum builds through small (often tiny), consistent action. Whether you’re working toward a personal milestone or a professional dream or working your way out of a negative situation, progress comes from showing up for yourself persistently. Action creates clarity, and over time, those steps forward add up to something real.
You don’t need to be fearless to reach your goals. In fact, I’ve done some of the hardest things in my life while I was really scared. My clients tell me the same thing. But you can take a tiny step with butterflies in your stomach, your voice shaky, or palms sweaty. Sometimes anxiety and excitement feel alot like each other and that’s ok. Often you are capable of more than you know. I think some of the biggest shifts and the greatest growth happen from some of the tiniest starts- looking up the email address, dialing the phone number, reading about something new that you may want to do. But even if it’s with a shaky voice (and hands!), it’s a tiny step worth taking because over time it will accumulate into big changes in your life.
